African Hoodia Cactus

African hoodia cactusAfrican hoodia cactus is one of the most fascinating ancient plants to capture the imagination of the modern world.

The Sans Bushmen of the Kalahari Desert have been using it for literally thousands of years for a variety of medicinal purposes. First and foremost, they use it to blunt their appetite and thirst for long hunting trips. But they also use it a variety of health conditions.

Technically speaking, there is no such thing as african hoodia cactus. It's actually not a cactus, but a succulent. But, obviously from the image displayed here, you can easily see why people call it a cactus because of its appearance, replete with prickly spines.

Another thing to note is that there are over a dozen species of Hoodia which are native to Southern Africa. However, hoodia gordonii is the only species of the all the hoodia's that has an appetite killing compound.

Hoodia Gordonii Propagation

The dozen or so hoodia species are all protected by trade and propagation laws in southern Africa. Even if you lived in South Africa, you'd still have to seek permission through the proper regulatory agencies to grow and propagate hoodia gordonii.

For exotic plant buffs, hoodia gordonii propagation is usually done from seed, not cuttings. Seeds are produced in the late fall of the year -- October/November.

Because of protection laws, it's not possible for people to import hoodia gordonii plants into the United States and grow them for your own personal use.

In fact, even for those companies that produce supplements made from hoodia gordonii, it requires a special, hard to obtain license issued from the proper South African government body.

There will undoubtedly be people who try to obtain hoodia seeds and attempt hoodia gordonii propagation on their own...but such people should be aware they are running afoul of the laws and may face serious reprecussions if caught.

It's simply not worth it.

If you are interested in african hoodia cactus for weight loss, then find a supplement seller that displays certification, see hoodia c.i.t.e.s. certificate, that they are using real South African hoodia gordonii in their products.

The fact that this license is so difficult to obtain and that hoodia gordonii is such a limited supply commodity, one must be careful in choosing only products made with genuine South African hoodia gordonii.
