Facts, Advice & Opinions about Hoodia Gordoni

What is Hoodia Gordonii?

What is hoodia gordonii is a question many people who are trying to lose weight are asking themselves these days.

Big stories were done on hoodia from major sources of news, such as 60 Minutes, ABC, and the BBC.

For those who saw or read any of this news coverage, the answer to the question is probably already known to them.

On the other hand, there are undoubtedly millions of people who missed the hoodia story coverage, but have heard the buzz phrase hoodia gordonii being bandied about.

Such people probably have heard that a substance called hoodia is a new anti-obesity wonder pill around the office watercooler. Or perhaps they've purchased some diet supplements and products at their local health food store or vitamin shop and have seen that some of these now contain "hoodia" as one of the ingredients, and they are left wondering....

What is Hoodia Gordonii?

First of all, hoodia is a plant. But it's important to note that there are many kinds of hoodia plants. Only the one called hoodia gordonii has the active anti-obesity constituent that so many people are searching for.

What Part of the Hoodia Plant is Potent

The Westen world seems to have a fascination with remedies sourced from exotic faraway places. We envision, for example, herbs growing in the wild that may contain compounds that will cure cancer in the rainforest.

That's probably why when the news broke that deep in the Kalahari Desert in South Africa a plant called hoodia gordonii has been used for thousands of years by the Sans Bushmen, a primitive tribe of nomadic hunterers, to stave off hunger and thirst on long hunting trips, it spread like wildfire.

It was a romantic image. But more than that....there seems to be ample rather than flimsy evidence for the efficacy of hoodia gordonii.

Many people are wondering what part of the hoodia plant is potent and responsible for its anti-obesity effects. This is hard to say. All we know is that the Sans Bushmen cut off a piece of the stalk, remove the prickly spines, and then consume it.

One argument is that many of the products on the market claiming to contain hoodia gordonii are actually made up of a lot of the pulpy leaf and flowers extracts that the Sans Bushmen do not eat, and probably contain none of the active hunger killing constituents.

Many people who are wondering what is hoodia gordonii have probably also heard that there is a patented product in the works. This is true. A company called Phytopharm has the patent rights to the active ingredient in hoodia gordonii, which has been termed p57. Click the following link to read more about: Phytopharm's hoodia gordonii

Another important thing to note is that hoodia gordonii is not a stimulant like many weight loss ingredients on the market. It works by killing the appetite, not by stimulating the body's metabolic rate.

On the one hand, this is good news because it should be a safer product since it doesn't seem to harbor bad side effects like stimulants do.

However, some sellers of hoodia gordonii products will put metabolic boosters in their product because they apparently think it would be more effective to not only have the appetite killing benefits of hoodia gordonii, but ingredients that also help rev up your metabolism.

We won't say if we agree with those sellers who just use pure hoodia gordonii or those who put other metabolic stimulating ingredients in their products in an attempt to enhance the product's weight loss/fat loss benefits.

We merely point it out for your consideration so you can make a more informed choice.
