Hoodia and Depression

What is the hoodia and depression connection?

There is no scientific research to date -- at least that we know of -- that shows hoodia can alleviate depression.

However, the Sans Bushmen of the Kalahari desert have been using hooda gordonii for thousands of years for a variety of therapeutic and medicinal benefits.

Benefits of Hoodia

Among these uses of hoodia gordonii by the Sans Bushmen include using the plant for treating:

  • hemorrhoids
  • hypertension
  • diabetes
  • abdominal cramps.

Of course, the Sans Bushmen also use it to suppress their appetite and thirst urges on long hunting trips, which is why hoodia has become famous as a weight loss agent.

Also, the Sans Bushmen use it for boosting their mood...and as a sort of aphrodisiac.

BBC who travelled to the Kalahari desert to sample hoodia gordonii stated: "The plant is said to have a feel-good almost aphrodisiac quality, and I have to say, we felt good."

Keep in mind this is all anecdotal, not scientific evidence. It would be interesting to see if there is a connection between alleviating depression and hoodia gordonii use if clinical studies were carried out.

If you suffer from depression, we wouldn't advise you use hoodia in place of any anti-depressants you may be taking that's for sure.

Also, what's not known is if there are any drug interactions with hoodia and prescription drugs.

Also, if you are diabetic don't start using it just because one of the benefits of hoodia gordonii is for diabetes according to the Sans Bushmen.

This is because hoodia gordonii tricks the brain into thinking its full. Normally, blood sugar rises as we eat, and the glucose from the foods we consume trigger nerve cells in our mid-brain into thinking we are full even if we're not.

Therefore, diabetics using hoodia gordonii may experience a dangerous drop in blood sugar and not even know it if they feel full but haven't eaten.

Having stated all of these precautions, hoodia gordonii seems like a really interesting plant, and there's little wonder that it's become so popular in many supplements.
