Hoodia Appetite Suppressants

So called hoodia appetite suppressants are the hottest weight loss products these days. The ingredient hoodia is popping up in dozens of fat burners and diet pills.

As often happens with this sort of thing, there's a lot of confus ion and misunderstanding on the part of consumers, and outright fraud and deception on the part of some companies desperately trying to capitalize on the craze.

We'll try to clear up some of this confusion and reveal some tactics these companies are using so you can make a more informed choice when it comes to hoodia gordonii.

First, let's talk about the supposed weight loss benefits of hoodia.

A British based pharmaceutical company named Phytopharm owns the patent rights to the active ingredient in hoodia gordonii, which is now called P57 (the active ingredient that is).

This active ingredient from the plant is what is responsible for its appetite suppressant effect.

Phytopharm conducted a scientific double-blind, placebo-controlled clinical study in which they divided a group of morbidly obese participants in half. Half were given P57 hoodia gordonii extract and half were given placebo.

Although there are more details, to make a long story short, the study yielded great success: the participants who used hoodia appetite suppressants -- P57 -- ended up consuming a 1,000 less calories per day than the control group (the participants taking placebo). Body fat also was reduced significantly in participants using the P57 hoodia gordonii and they experienced no known negative side effects.

Based on this, one might conclude that hoodia gordonii is a sure thing.

But this would be premature. You see, in the scientific world, one study is not the end all be all. Further studies need to be conducted to make sure they don't contradict the earlier studies, not only for efficacy of P57 but for safety too.

So, Phytopharm is currently carrying out more studies before releasing any P57 based products. These products may not be available for a couple of years yet.

So what to make of all the hoodia products currently on the market?

Well, the fact of the matter is just because Phytopharm owns the patent to the active ingredient doesn't mean other companies can't sell hoodia products.

But buyer beware because it's the Wild Wild West right now when it comes to hoodia products, and you should be armed with important knowledge.

To protect yourself against scams, know these things:

  • Authentic hoodia gordonii is very rare. It's a protected species and is hard to grow and takes many years before it can be harvested. It also requires a hard to obtain license for import granted by South Africa regulatory agencies. Because of this, demand is far greater than supply.

Some companies who can't get their hands on the real stuff are saying their products contain "hoodia" but they don't contain hoodia gordonii. There are over a dozen kinds of hoodia plant, but only hoodia gordonii acts as an appetite suppressant. Therefore, such unethical companies can say their products contains "pure hoodia" without technically lying.

  • Only Phytopharm, the company that has the patent to the active ingredient in hoodia gordonii, can claim their products are proven as a hoodia appetite suppressant. No other company can claim this until they have their products proven in clinical studies.

What these other companies can claim is that their products contain hoodia gordonii, which has been used by the Sans Bushmen of South Africa for blunting their appetite for thousands of years. The distinction here is between making claims for the product itself and the ingredients in the product.

  • Never buy any so called hoodia appetite suppressants through email spam. No legitimate company is going to spam you to buy their hoodia products....but we personally get multiple spams every day now trying to sell us hoodia.

  • Only buy from companies that have displayed on their website certified documents to prove that they are using genuine hoodia gordonii from South African. These are the C.I.T.E.S Certificate and the Analytical Report.
