Hoodia Dosage

With hoodia being sold in many products these days, knowing what hoodia dosage to take is on more people's minds.

There are two basic questions people are asking themselves: what is the most effective hoodia dosage for losing weight and what is the hoodia maximum strength dosage that is still safe to take?

Not only that, but many people take hoodia supplements multiple times of day and have questions like: can you use 1000 mg of hoodia gordonii 3 times a day ?

Let's talk about common dosages first.

Hoodia 1000
Hoodia 750

Some of the common dosages you can find for hoodia products are:

  • hoodia 1000mg
  • hoodia 750 mg

Two other common hoodia dosages found are:

  • Hoodia 500 mg
  • Hoodia 400 mg

Let's comment on safety first.

First, although hoodia appears to be very safe, nobody can say for sure yet at this point in time if it truly is safe. See is hoodia harmless for more on this.

What we know is that it has been used in the Sans Bushmen for thousands of years (the primitive tribe in South Africa that first discovered it) without any known bad side effects.

Secondly, we know that the company that owns the patent rights to the active ingredient in hoodia gordonii, called Phytopharm, conducted a double-blind, placebo-controlled scientific study. The participants in the study that used hoodia did not suffer any negative side effects.

But here's why you should be cautious anyway: the study was rather small. Larger studies with more participants need to be conducted before we have a better idea of the safety profile of hoodia.

Also, no studies to date have been conducted with hoodia gordonii on pregnant women or people taking prescription medications, or people who suffer from various health conditions.

Although a lot of consumers are using hoodia 1000mg (and some even 3 times a day); and many others are using Hoodia 750 mg without any known side effects yet, these people should know that it's a risk they are taking until more safety data is released in the future.

Another thing to keep in mind is that the actual hoodia dosage itself can be misleading.

Here's what we mean:

Hoodia Maximum Strength

A lot of people looking at the list above may assume that 1000mg is hoodia maximum strength.

However, many hoodia products on the market are made from whole plant. What this means is simply that the entire hoodia plant is ground up and then encapsulated into supplements, capsules, tablets, pills, etc.

However, almost 40% of the hoodia gordonii plant is therapeutically useless. You see, the leaves, the skin, and other fibrous material of the hoodia plant contains no active ingredient that helps suppress the appetite. The Sans Bushmen themselves remove these parts and discard them.

Some other makers of hoodia do a concentration. Here's how they typically do this: they take the plant and place it in alcohol solution. When the alcohol is removed, it pulls out a lot of the useless materials (fillers) with it (the pulply leaves, flowers, etc). This leaves a lot more of the good stuff -- the core of the plant, where the active ingredient is.

When you see a "10:1" on the label that means 10 grams of whole hoodia plant was used to make just 1 gram of powder that will be used in the product. In short, this is a lot more concentrated, and therefore will be a lot more expensive if it's real hoodia gordonii. See hoodia c.i.t.e.s. certificate for more on this.

If you understand what we just described, then you'll understand that sometimes a hooda 400 mg product can be a better buy than a hoodia 750 mg product as just one example.

It's also important to note that many people report results with different dosages. Some people may report positive results with only 200mg and some may need 500mg or more. Everyone is differnet and one dosage isn't going to work for everyone equally the same.
