How Hoodia Works

How hoodia works is a question many people want to know the answer to.

Not only do people who are moderately overweight want to lose weight with african hoodia cactus but many others want to know: does it work on obese people?

Let's first discuss how it works. It's pretty fascinating stuff.

In the mid-region of your brain you possess many nerve cells that sense glucose. Glucose is what we get when we eat food, and it increases our blood sugar levels. Our bodies use glucose for energy, basically.

When we eat, the increase in glucose is sensed by these nerve cells in the brain and, eventually, when we have enough glucose, these nerve cells give us a feeling of fullness.

Here's where things get interesting: hoodia gordonii appears to mimic the effect of glucose. Therefore, even when we haven't eaten, the nerve cells that sense for glucose in our mid-brain are tricked into thinking we have eaten....and we feel full.

Now, let's talk about if hoodia works on obese people.

Hoodia Does it Work On Obese People

Phytopharm, the pharmaceutical company that owns the patent to the active ingredient responsible for hoodia gordonii's appetite suppressing effects, conducted a double-blind, clinical study on morbidly obese participants.

Half of the participants were given placebo, while the other half were given P57 -- the name for the active ingredient in hoodia gordonii.

The results were simply amazing.

The group that was given P57 consumed on average 1,000 less calories per day than the control group (the participants taking placebo). The group using P57 hoodia gordonii experienced not only a reduction in calories consumed, but reduced body fat; and had no discernible bad side effects when compared against the control group.

Phytopharm is conducting further studies on P57 currently and won't be releasing any products for an estimated couple of years.

In the meantime, there are many hoodia gordonii products on the market. To understand the difference between Phtyopharm's products and some others on the market, you may want to review our page on effectiveness of hoodia gordonii.
